In a bus topology, all nodes are connected by a common, backbone link called the bus line. All data is transmitted and received through the bus line. To add a new node, just plug it into the bus line. The ends of the bus line are called terminators.

Advantages: easy to set up and expand, inexpensive compared to other networks, requires little cable, plus one node failure does not bring down the entire network
Disadvantages: limit on the number of nodes because the more nodes connected then the less efficient the network is, dependency on the backbone, less security since all nodes can access the backbone, difficult to troubleshoot
